A newly introduced primary consumer would compete with those already existing in the ecosystem for their share of the producers. For example, a rabbit introduced into a new forest ecosystem will compete with the native squirrels for seeds to munch on. This will cause the squirrels to have less food, and their population will decline as the rabbit population grows. As the rabbit population grows, secondary consumers, wolves for example, will also grow because they have an increase in their food source.

But as the wolf population grows, there will be more competition for food (the rabbits). This will further send the ecosystem into an unbalanced state. As the wolf population grows, the rabbit population will quickly decline as the wolves eat them. This will cause the wolf population to then decline as their food source shrinks. This up-and-down size of the two populations may continue and become more drastic, or it may continue and eventually find a balance of the number of rabbits and the number of wolves. But only time will tell for sure.

Disturbances to an ecosystem’s biodiversity can also be caused by abiotic factors. For example, the space available for a particular ecosystem may shrink, which would decrease the biodiversity. A wildfire can destroy all of the producers and shelter in another ecosystem, leaving animals homeless and starving.
